Why Do Job Sites Need One?
OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) requires washing facilities on construction sites, and that requirement stands on its own regardless of how many toilets you have. A crew handling paints, coatings, solvents, herbicides or insecticides needs somewhere to wash before eating and at the end of the shift. Hand sanitizer alone does not replace soap and running water, which is the mistake we correct most often when a site calls in a hurry. What Comes With the Station?
A standard portable station gives you a foot pump or push tap, a fresh water reservoir, a greywater catch tank underneath, a soap dispenser and paper towels. Nothing needs a hose bib or a drain, so the station can sit in the middle of a field, in a parking lot or on a slab with no utilities in sight. How Many Stations Do You Need?
Start from the toilet count and work outward. OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) sets one toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers above 20, so a crew of 30 already needs more than a single fixture group. The ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 baseline of one unit per ten workers over a 40 hour week with one service visit is a useful cross check when the schedule is long. Where Should the Station Go?
Put it on firm, level ground within sight of the restrooms and along the path crews already walk. Keep it clear of trench edges, swing radii and vehicle routes. Does Milwaukee Winter Affect a Handwashing Station?
Yes, more than it affects a toilet. A station carries standing fresh water, and Milwaukee winters on Lake Michigan are cold enough that an unprotected supply line or reservoir can freeze and split. From roughly November through March we plan for that: winter tank treatment on the restroom side, and a placement and service plan that keeps the sink usable rather than decorative. What Does It Cost to Rent One?
Handwashing stations are usually quoted as an add-on to a restroom order rather than on their own, because that is how sites actually use them. Delivery typically runs $50 to $150 depending on distance and access, and routine weekly service runs $30 to $60 per unit. The restroom side of the same order follows published bands: a standard porta potty rental runs $125 to $250 for a weekend and $125 to $325 for a month, a deluxe flushing unit runs $200 to $350 for a weekend, and an ADA accessible porta potty runs $199 to $300 for a weekend.
Do I need a station if I only have one porta potty?
Yes. Under OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) the washing requirement applies regardless of how few toilets you have.
How often does the station get serviced?
On the same visit as your restrooms in most cases. Fresh water gets refilled, greywater gets pumped, and soap and towels get restocked.
Can I use one at a food event?
